  8.         Little over five years and five hundred files later, here I
  9. am a world away from where it started. Have you thought about what
  10. all goes by in five years time? How those things influence and change
  11. us? Let me list a few that come to mind for me and the zine.
  12.

  14.         I have lived in three cities at seven addresses.
  15.  
  16.         Had three cars and five jobs. My first job while
  17.         working on the zine was making a little above minimum
  18.         wage. Now I am salaried with bonus and 401k.
  19.  
  20.         Two serious girlfriends, two other girlfriends
  21.         worth mentioning. (ie: lasted more than 3 months)
  22.         One of the serious ones was Demonika, who is the
  23.         second largest contributor to the zine.
  24.  
  25.         Six laptops, fourteen full size computers (most of
  26.         which run some flavor of Unix). The zine started
  27.         with me having a 2400 baud modem, and is currently
  28.         hosted on my own network which is colocated on
  29.         a burstable T3. Laptops are significant as I write
  30.         most of my files on them while watching movies or
  31.         spending time outside of my computer room.

  33.         500 files, 167 pieces of mailed replies to those
  34.         files. 
  35.  
  36.         Three cats. (four if you count Dem's second cat
  37.         that is my surrogate step-child). Ms Kitty (the
  38.         family cat) who was put to sleep last month at
  39.         21 years old. Speedbump, 20th century cult hero
  40.         who is living with Demonika. Roadblock, an alien
  41.         child who was adopted to give Speedbump some company
  42.         during the day. And my new son SnowCrash who has
  43.         recently taken to pissing on my couch cushions to
  44.         show his love for me.
  45.  
  46.         An average of 5 diet cokes a day which totals
  47.         about 9125 in five years. I bet there were more.
  48.  
  49.         157,680,000 seconds. That's roughly 4% of the average
  50.         life span today.

  53.         So what the hell did any of that have to do with anything?
  54. Think back to the first year of the 'zine and look at the transition
  55. it has gone through. Started by a 19 year old college dropout
  56. just learning about life, and now going strong by a 24 year old
  57. computer professional. Simply amazing when I think about it. Moreso
  58. when you see the same fundamental thoughts and beliefs held by the
  59. writers. On top of the drastic changes in my life, you can imagine
  60. what some of the others have gone through.
  61.  
  62.         Five years, five hundred files, ninety six different writers,
  63. and over four megs of text. Bruce Sterling's _The Hacker Crackdown_
  64. is about 400k in ASCII format. That means the collected works of
  65. F.U.C.K. is over ten times the length of that book. "Truly impressive"
  66. is the first thing that comes to my mind. "Downright scary" the second
  67. after I think about it. How many files are written about problems in our
  68. lives or in society. What does that tell you about the perceived
  69. world we live in? Tells me to be afraid. Very afraid.
